Cancelling a UAE residency visa is a mandatory step when leaving the country, changing employers, or closing a company. Skipping it creates problems: overstay fines, travel bans, and complications on future visa applications.
This guide covers every type of UAE visa cancellation, the costs, timelines, and what to watch out for.
When You Must Cancel Your UAE Residency Visa
Your UAE residency visa must be formally cancelled when:
- You are leaving the UAE permanently
- Your employment contract ends or you resign
- Your employer terminates your contract
- You change sponsors (new employer, new visa category)
- You close your business or freezone company
- Your child turns 18 (or 21 if in full-time education)
- You switch from an employment visa to a self-sponsored visa
The visa does not expire on its own when you leave. Without formal cancellation, you remain a UAE resident on paper, which causes issues when you return or apply for any future visa.
Types of Visa Cancellation
Employer-Sponsored (Employment Visa)
If your UAE visa was sponsored by an employer, the employer is responsible for initiating the cancellation through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) or the relevant free zone authority.
The process:
- Employer submits cancellation request on the MOHRE portal or free zone system
- Your visa is cancelled in the government system
- Your Emirates ID is automatically deactivated
- You receive a 30-day grace period to either leave the UAE or obtain a new visa
You cannot cancel an employer-sponsored visa yourself through official channels. If your employer refuses to cancel it, you can contact MOHRE directly or file a complaint through the Labour Ministry.
What to check: Ask your employer for written confirmation of the cancellation and verify it yourself on the ICA website or GDRFA app.
Investor and Self-Sponsored Visa
If you hold an investor visa, partner visa, or any self-sponsored UAE visa, you initiate the cancellation yourself. This includes:
- Mainland LLC investor visas
- Free zone investor visas
- Spouse or parent self-sponsoring their own visa
Process for investor visas:
- Cancel your company or free zone trade licence first (or simultaneously)
- Submit visa cancellation through ICA (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security) or GDRFA (Dubai residents)
- Use the ICA app, GDRFA app, or a licensed typing centre
- Pay cancellation fees
- You have 30 days to exit after cancellation is processed
Freezone Visa Cancellation
Freezone visas are cancelled through the relevant free zone authority, not MOHRE or GDRFA directly. Examples:
- DMCC: through the DMCC member portal
- IFZA: through the IFZA online portal
- JAFZA: through JAFZA’s dedicated HR portal
The freezone then notifies ICA and the cancellation is reflected in the central system within 1-3 business days. Your Emirates ID is cancelled at the same time.
Dependent Visa Cancellation
If you are cancelling visas for dependents (spouse, children) sponsored by you, you must cancel their visas before or alongside your own. Dependents cannot hold a UAE visa without an active sponsor.
Process: Submit through ICA or GDRFA under your sponsor account. Each dependent requires a separate cancellation request.
How to Cancel Your Visa: Step by Step
Option 1: ICA App or Website (for residents outside Dubai, or self-sponsored)
- Download the ICA UAE app or go to smartservices.ica.gov.ae
- Log in with UAE Pass
- Select “Residency Services” then “Cancel Residency”
- Enter the visa holder’s details (Emirates ID number, date of birth)
- Pay the cancellation fee online
- Receive confirmation by email or SMS
Available 24/7. Processing takes 1-3 business days.
Option 2: GDRFA App (Dubai Residents)
Dubai residents can use the GDRFA app or visit gdrfad.gov.ae:
- Log in with your Emirates ID or UAE Pass
- Select “Visa Services” then “Cancel Residency”
- Complete the form and pay fees
- Receive a cancellation notification
Option 3: Typing Centre
Any authorised government typing centre in the UAE can process visa cancellations. Costs are higher (AED 200-500 additional service fee) but useful if you are unfamiliar with the online process or need same-day assistance.
Typing centres in most malls, near courts, and immigration offices.
Option 4: Cancelling from Outside the UAE
If you have already left the UAE without cancelling your visa, you can apply for cancellation through:
- The ICA website (smartservices.ica.gov.ae)
- Your employer’s MOHRE portal (if employment visa)
Processing from outside the UAE typically takes 3-7 business days.
Visa Cancellation Costs (2026)
| Fee Type | Amount (AED) |
|---|---|
| Visa cancellation (government fee) | 100-200 |
| Typing centre service fee | 200-500 |
| GDRFA same-day processing (optional) | 150 |
| Total (self-service online) | 100-200 |
| Total (via typing centre) | 300-700 |
Employer-sponsored cancellations: the employer typically pays all fees. If they ask you to pay, you can negotiate or dispute this via MOHRE.
Emirates ID cancellation is included in the visa cancellation process. No separate fee.
Grace Period After Visa Cancellation
Once your UAE residency visa is cancelled, you have a 30-day grace period to either:
- Leave the UAE
- Apply for a new UAE visa (employment, investment, or other category)
This 30-day grace period applies to most visa types. During this period you can remain legally in the UAE and use your Emirates ID for some services, but you are no longer a UAE resident.
Exit Permits
An “exit permit” is not the same as visa cancellation. If your employer cancelled your visa but you need extra time to arrange your departure, you can apply for an exit permit through GDRFA or ICA. Exit permits extend your legal stay by up to 30 additional days.
What Happens If You Don’t Cancel
If you do not cancel your visa and simply leave the UAE, the visa remains active in the system. This creates several problems:
Overstay fines if you return: If you re-enter the UAE before the visa expiry without a new visa, you will not face fines. But if the visa has expired and was never cancelled, the system may flag your status as irregular on future applications.
Future visa complications: When applying for a new UAE visa, immigration officers can see your visa history. An active visa with no exit record or cancellation creates questions that delay processing.
Company closure issues: If you close a mainland or freezone company, your investor visa must be cancelled as part of the deregistration process. Without cancellation, the company closure cannot be completed.
Bank accounts: UAE banks will eventually flag accounts associated with cancelled Emirates IDs. You should close or transfer bank accounts before leaving, regardless of visa status. See our guide to UAE banking for expats for what to do before you leave.
Overstay Fines in the UAE
If you stay in the UAE after your grace period expires, overstay fines apply immediately:
- AED 25 per day for the first 6 months
- AED 50 per day after 6 months
- A minimum fine of AED 200 at the point of exit
Fines must be paid at the airport before departure or at a GDRFA/ICA office. Unpaid fines result in a travel ban and prevent future entry to the UAE.
If you have accumulated overstay fines, you can check and pay them through the GDRFA app or at an authorised typing centre before attempting to leave.
Verification: How to Confirm Your Visa Is Cancelled
After submitting a cancellation request, verify the status within 3 business days:
- ICA website: Enter your passport number and date of birth at icp.gov.ae under “Residency Status Check”
- GDRFA app: Check under “My Visas” — status will show as “Cancelled”
- Emirates ID check: Swipe the ID at any government kiosk or use the UAE Pass app — it will show inactive
Do not leave the UAE assuming your visa is cancelled without checking. Employers occasionally delay or fail to process cancellations.
Cancellation When Changing Jobs
If you are switching employers in the UAE, your new employer typically handles both the old visa cancellation and the new visa application. The process:
- Resign from current employer
- Current employer cancels your work permit and visa on MOHRE
- New employer submits a new work permit application
- Once approved, new employer applies for your new entry permit or status change
- You complete a medical test and Emirates ID registration for the new visa
Timing matters: if the new employer processes the new visa before the old one is cancelled, you may need a status change rather than a new entry permit (which saves one step if you are already in the UAE).
For step-by-step detail on the employment visa process, see our guide to UAE employee work visas.
Cancellation When Closing a Company
Investors holding a UAE residence visa tied to their own company must cancel both the company licence and the visa. The order matters:
For freezone companies:
- Cancel all employee visas first
- Cancel your own investor visa
- De-register the company with the free zone authority
For mainland companies:
- Publish liquidation notice in two local newspapers
- Obtain NOC from DED (Dubai) or relevant emirate authority
- Cancel employee and investor visas through MOHRE
- Complete company deregistration
The company cannot be fully closed with outstanding visas still active. Start the visa cancellation process early to avoid delays.
Practical Tips
Keep your Emirates ID until you leave. Even after visa cancellation, your Emirates ID may remain useful for checking into hotels, healthcare visits, and government offices during your 30-day grace period. Surrender it only at the airport on departure or after obtaining a new visa.
Get written confirmation from your employer. If your employer cancelled your visa, request a formal letter confirming the cancellation date. This protects you in case of disputes.
Cancel bank accounts last. You need an active bank account to receive any outstanding salary or gratuity payments. Cancel the account only after all outstanding payments are received. Read our UAE end of service gratuity guide to understand what you are owed.
Check your credit report before leaving. If you have any loans, credit cards, or telecoms contracts, settle them before visa cancellation. Unpaid debts can result in travel bans even after you have left the UAE.
